Thanks to everyone who supported the Tibetan Freedom Movement in this year's Facebook Causes Giving Challenge!

They came in 7th overall, won $10,500 in prize money, and raised $32,000!

As a truly grassroots organization, Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) relies on the support of individuals like you to continue important work for Tibet.

All the money raised from this contest will go to:
* Deploying attention-grabbing actions that amplify the voices of Tibetans inside Tibet;
* Investing in the next generation of Tibetan leaders;
* Pressing political leaders around the world to take a stand for Tibet;
* Securing the release of Tibetan political prisoners who risked everything to speak out for freedom.

Diwali - Good Over Evil

Today is Diwali or Dīpāvali - a significant festival in Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism, and today, an official holiday in India.

Adherents of these religions celebrate Diwali as the Festival of Lights. They light diyas—cotton string wicks inserted in small clay pots filled with oil—to signify victory of good over the evil within an individual.

I am all for celebrating the victory of good over evil.

How the challenge works:

Each day between now and November 6, 2009 (30 days in total), Tibetan Freedom Movement can win $1000 a day if we get the greatest number of individual donations in the 24 hour period (the daily contest runs from 3pm ET to 3pm ET) .

The cause with the greatest number of donations at the end of the 30-day period wins $50,000. The minimum donation per individual is $10, You can only donate once per day to count as a unique donation in the overall count, but you can donate on multiple days.

For example: If you make a donation at 3:01pm on October 8th and then another donation at 3:01pm on October 9th, both donations will count towards the overall total.

Tibetan Freedom Movement is 40,000 members strong. If each of us, take 2 minutes to donate $10 to the "Tibetan Freedom Movement," there is no doubt that we will not only win the $1,000 one-day challenges, but also the grand prize of $50,000.

The Center of America

Ever wondered where the center of America is located? The US Geological Survey says that there really isn't a completely accepted definition of the “geographic center” of an area.

We might go with “the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface of an area would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness.”

Hmmm... that's complicated. When I was akid, I thought we learned in school that it was somewhere in Kansas.

And there are all those factors that would influence any measurement of the center of a large land mass - bodies of water, the curvature of the Earth etc.
